A new batch of birding backpacks has been delivered to the @windsorpublibrary thanks to a grant from TD friends of the Environment Foundation and a generous donation from the official optics partner of PIBO, @vortexcanadabirding ! These multilingual kits contain 1-2 vortex binoculars, field guides and local resources on the best places to spot birds.

The beautiful Canada Day weather gave a perfect op

The beautiful Canada Day weather gave a perfect opportunity to install some @featherfriendly window tape on an balcony door. PIBO’s ED spent the evening installing it at her mom’s apartment . Birds also collide with glass doors and now this one will be safe for the birds. In the second photo, the squares virtually disappear in the evening light so mom won’t have to worry about the squares obstructing her view. She regularly has hummingbirds visit the flowers in her micro garden. ❤️

Highlights from June 3-16 at PIBO 🥚🐣🐥

The breeding season is in full swing here on Pelee Island, with many species already raising 2nd broods! We are busy looking for and documenting breeding evidence of all birds on Pelee Island, with a special emphasis on species-at-risk such as Red-headed Woodpeckers, Prothonotary Warblers, and Yellow-breasted Chats. Many fledglings and other wildlife freeze in response to danger, so drive slowly and keep an eye out for little fluff balls on the road.

Photo 1: A Downy Woodpecker (Dryobates pubescens) fledgling atop a branch. It takes parents 1-3 weeks to excavate a nest cavity before they can nest.
Photo 2: A Killdeer (Charadrius vociferus) chick hiding in the grass. Though they can leave the nest and feed themselves mere hours after hatching, they rely on their parents to signal for danger and keep them warm when temperatures drop.

Highlights from May 27-June 2 at PIBO 🌦🌸💙

Highlights from May 27-June 2 at PIBO 🌦🌸💙

It was a rainy and windy week, but it cleared up for our last few days of banding and we had beautiful weather. During the daily census, we observed two new species for this year, Caspian Terns and a Black-crowned Night Heron. Some other highlights included two young Great Black-backed Gulls at the tip of Fish Point on June 1, a Blackpoll Warbler singing on June 2, and an abundance of Chestnut-sided Warblers.

Most days we banded 2-5 birds, often consisting of Yellow-bellied Flycatchers and Swainson’s Thrushes. Surprisingly, the only new species banded this week was a Common Grackle. We also caught a Red-eyed Vireo, but it was a recaptured bird from a previous year. However, on May 31, we had a last push of birds during some beautiful sunny weather: we banded 15 birds of 11 species! The final bird we banded this spring was the brightest blue adult male Indigo Bunting.

Last week, we banded 23 birds, bringing PIBO’s final spring banding total to 553 birds of 58 species. In addition to new birds, we had 58 recaptures this season. In the coming weeks, we will be conducting marsh bird surveys, species-at-risk surveys, and contributing to Ontario’s Breeding Bird Atlas.
