“Thunderbird,” by David Gonzales, Squamish Nation. David Gonzales was born in Kamloops, B.C., in 1971, and began drawing and carving at age 7. At 17, he was creating Coast Salish Contemporary Carvings inspired by his father, Ernest Alphonse. In 1998, Gonzales studied carving with Nisga’a artists Chester Moore and Ritchie Morgan, and later with Tsimshian artist Herbert Reece.
