
“Orca Breaching,” by Len McKay, Coast Salish. Street-based carver Len McKay occupies a regular spot in the enttrance of a well-kept office building in Vancouver, where he talks with passersby as he carves, explaining the images and exchanging tips about tools and wood. In this work, the orca’s elongated dorsal fin conveys the power of this iconic creature, and the mouth displays the jagged teeth that are integral to carvings and paintings by Indigenous artists of the Northwest Coast of BC.
