“Frog with Moon,” by Darrel Amos, Haida Nation. Vancouver artist Darrel Amos, who died last year, had been producing art since he was a young boy on Haida Gwaii. Both the frog and moon play major roles in the art and origin stories of the Haida Nation. The moon often is portrayed as a protective spirit, occupying a “grandmother” persona. The frog is a bright, friendly, welcoming denizen of the waters everywhere in the Haida world. In this painting, Darrel Amos synthesizes their images and their spirits, with the frog encompassing the moon while the moon guides and sustains the frog. Acrylic on acid-free art paper, 11 x16 inches. Value $225
